Teaching African American Music History: Creating an Equitable and Responsible Curriculum
This course gives teachers the opportunity to study the music, history, artist, styles and cultural impact of African American Music through research, listening, discussion and creating. This class will survey and demonstrate the musical and cultural history, genres and artists that comprise the rich diaspora of Black music including spirituals, blues, jazz, gospel, rock, funk, soul, pop and hip hop.
Teaching Songwriting, Production, and Creativity
Learn how to incorporate songwriting into your teaching in order to revolutionize your lesson planning, boost student morale, heighten creativity, manage your classroom effectively, and develop your students' social, emotional and musical “VOICE.” This course is designed to help teachers observe, plan and initiate new methods and approaches towards music learning that are culturally responsive, forward-thinking and innovative.
Music for the World: Developing a World Music Program
This course is designed to help teachers develop a well-rounded, world music curriculum for elementary music students. Teaching world music to children at an early age can cultivate and introduce your students to a new and diverse pallet of sounds, scales, instruments, time signatures, vocal styles, dances, cultures, and musical taste; while simultaneously teaching your students to respect, appreciate and value different cultures.
